RACHEL KORN / BIBLICAL POEMS / THE EARTH IS RED

The Earth is Red
Translated by Edward Ginsburg, Philadelphia, PA.

The earth is red,
Like Cain’s dream
In the humid, sultry night
When Jehovah was young
And Abel gently pensive.

An angel whets his crooked sickle
On the old, tall cliff
Crumbling stone by stone,
As if memory aroused
The sorrow of the past.

In the crumbling sand beneath the stars
One still hears the sigh
Of that hour,
That stood watch
Over the Sultry night
And the tears of Eve.
