RACHEL KORN / Modern Yiddish Poetry / 31 CAMELS

THE 31 CAMELS

Thirty-one camels
trudge through the white burning sands
of the Sahara,
laden with the load
of my longing,
the treasure of my sacred hope.

against them
Sahara stretches her feverish brown body
indolent and weary.
Eagles fly over her with flaming wings
and lions soothe her with lullabies
on starry nights.

thirty-one camels
trudge among white caravans
of bleached skeletons
with annihilation
in their eyes.

Thirty-one camels
make their way
without a leader,
without a guide.
