Note: Yiddish Literature in translation is becoming more recognized today because of a renewed interest in the aftermath of the Holocaust. While the North American view of Yiddish tends to instantly call up far-fetched comedy routines or the musical “Fiddler on the Roof”, (adapted from Sholem Aleichem’s beloved stories of Tevye the milkman), the sophistication and fascinating scope of the literature is now available to English readers. Despite the fact that millions of English readers enjoy translated works such as Anna Karenina, Tolstoy’s Russian masterpiece in English, or works by Marcel Proust, translated from the French, Yiddish Literature translated into English up until now has not been met with as much success.

Readers interested in studying the literary movements such as classicism, romanticism, neo-romanticism, expressionism, impressionism and modernism in world literatures, would be surprised to find all of these literary elements abundant in Yiddish Literature. The space available to recreate works of Yiddish Literature in English with wonderful translations is remarkable.
